Alvarado Gardens Neighborhood

Volunteer Opportunities

Getting involved in the neighborhood is a great way to make a positive impact locally. If you're interested in any of the volunteer opportunities below, or if you have a project idea of your own, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at katherinechilton@me.com.

Join the Board

We are always looking for neighbors to join the AGNA board. As a board member, you'll get to meet several of your neighbors while learning about and supporting topics important to your community. Board membership is a two-year commitment, and the board meets four times a year.

The board's nominating committee puts out a request each winter looking for neighbors interested in serving. Voting occurs during the spring annual meeting and new board member terms begin after the annual meeting.

We are also seeking volunteers to help plan and host the annual meetings in the spring and the annual block party in the fall.

Join a Committee

Join a committee of board members and neighbor volunteers to help plan events, address local issues, and engage with people in your neighborhood. These are a few of the active committees you're welcome to join:

  • Traffic
  • Parking
  • Equity and Inclusion
  • Annual Block Party Planning
  • Annual Garage Sale Planning
  • Annual Luminaria Sale

Work on a Project

In addition to the committees focused on individual issues and events, the neighborhood also has ongoing projects that need volunteers to lend their time and expertise. Generally, volunteering for projects is less formal than committees and can be accomplished in smaller chunks of time.

  • Biannual neighborhood cleanup (part of the city's Keep Burque Clean program)
  • Weeding, pruning, cleaning sidewalks, islands, and shared neighborhood spaces
  • Help complete a neighborhood quilt
  • Work on a neighborhood tile project (help with planning, donate a tile, donate crockery)
  • Donate books to the Little Free Library near the west end of Campbell
  • Become a steward of the dog poop boxes at the ditches
  • Work on the repair and remodel of the kiosk at the end of Candelaria (at the mother ditch)

Pitch a Project

Do you have an idea that you'd like to share? Invent a new project and get neighbors involved to bring it to fruition. Here are some ideas to get you inspired:

  • Organize a plant exchange
  • Organize a repair fair
  • Add books to the little free libraries around the neighborhood or the poetry box on the SW corner of Candelaria and Glenwood
  • Volunteer at the Rio Grande Nature Center or La Puerta de Los Niños
  • Organize activities for neighborhood kids

Help Write Content

Help write thank you notes to donors of block party gifts, to people or businesses that have improved our neighborhood, or write stories or articles for our website. The time requirements of this volunteer position will vary throughout the year.
